Discovering The Connection Between Social Work And Politics

By Douglas Walker

When it comes to the field of sociology and political interests, the two are often vastly different. While this is the case, those training to work on electoral campaigns is one area in which this is not the case. For, those whom can lead others with regards to social work and politics are often sought after by a number of partisan and nonpartisan campaigns.

By studying and working in both areas, most individuals find it easier to promote social change while also pursuing political aspirations. While this is the case, there are also advocates on both sides of a campaign which tend to highlight these areas. In fact, recent research in the area has shown that advocates, students and social workers in these areas often make the best politicians.

Students and others running for office, whether at the local, state or federal level often have extremely different platforms. In some cases, the platforms are in line with a political party. In others, a candidate may have a platform which is more non-partisan than associated with a specific party.

While training is often available for those pursuing an elected position by a local election board or other organization, this is not always the case. Most students who have studied political science know the importance of an open and honest campaign. At the same time, these individuals may still want to attend any local training being offered in relation to campaigning, the election board and voter fraud. For, studies have shown that those attending such classes often have a better chance of becoming an elected official.

In some cases, it can be the work involved when students and others start working on campaigns that causes a loss in interest. Whether as a paid staff member or volunteer, the hours spent working on a campaign can often be long and tiresome. As such, while there are a number of people suited to serve as elected officials, there are also many more whom are just not cut out for this type of work.

Social workers are also advised to develop any talents associated with political aspirations as early as possible in the process. For, there are ongoing studies with regards to the effect political beliefs have on these individuals. In some cases, participants opted to change parties based on specific party platforms and personal beliefs.

Whether approaching the political area as a candidate, campaign staff or volunteer, studies have shown that those whom return often have a lot to offer. For, while sociologists rarely work in politics, there are politicians whom work with issues related to social justice on an ongoing basis. As such, those whom can focus on both areas often make some of the politicians.

One study in this area explored the existing interest in intensive social and political work. In this case, the study specifically targeted individuals working in either area. Whereas, a different study worked with students pursuing degrees in sociology and political science. Ultimately, researchers found that both studies showed that those majoring in sociology often became more interested in politics than others.
